mgmoricz - did you lobby? were you active?
I think that's the key!

I got selected for the March 2011 stage by my first choice DG without lobbying. And I wasn't contacted by any of the services during the selection phase in any way, whether phone or email.

So lobbying is not always necessary. However, I think my profile fitted really well my future unit's working area (both subject of my studies & my previous professional experience).

In general I would recommend lobbying, and normally I would have done it myself, just that the timing for the stage isn't really optimal for me. So actually I was partially hoping not to be selected, as now I had to choose between two great opportunities...

Of course I chose the EC stage! Wink

Hey guys, about lobbying, I read that you usually send a cover letter and your CV. Shall the cover letter include what we had already written in the motivation letter present in the application form? Or what else do you write in the e-mail you send to lobby?
Thanks!

Hello,

I have an important question.

Today, I posted my application. I have a bachelor degree and on May I am going to finish my master. Therefore, I sent a copy of my bachelor degree and a certification that declares my master studies. My university didn't provide me with the European Supplement and unfortunately, some minutes before I understood the real meaning of the phrase "University Transcripts". I thought it was about a concrete sign of the university (stamp and signature) on the degree, but as it seems I was wrong.
The DGs I applied for are in totally connection with my studies and seminars.
My question has to do with the admissibility of my application. Will I be automatically rejected becouse of the missing of the University Transcripts? Or can this paper be considered as a not so important omission?

Please answer me if somebody knows. I am really dissapointed now with myself. I made a lot of effort and now everything seems to be ruined. And I know I cannot sent now missing files.

Thank you

I know this is a very stupid question, but I'm getting really anxious: do we have to fill in the checklist on the last page of our application file? Please don't laugh at me, but I'm afraid of screwing it all by doing stupid mistakes!

I think it's mostly a tool to facilitate browsing through documents for the recruiters but since there was nothing written about not filling it in (like on a top box the first page of application where it was clearly stated), I filled it in and also put on the corresponding numbers on the copies of the documents attached (if 3 was "copies of university diploma", I put 3 on the papers connected to the diplomas and supplements etc.)

No, I don't think so, I believe it's there just to help us checking if the file is complete.

Hi-hi! Smile

I am about sending my application, but don't have a proof of ongoing studies, because new semester begins on 1 Feb, so they provide me a certification from the day after the deadline!!!

Do you think it's better not to mention my ongoing studies at all in order to avoid rejection because of a missing certification.

Still, I actually have a certification valid for the previous (/this) semester closing on 31 Jan. Shall I attach that one?

Thank you whoever answers!

I suggest you send that one and maybe write a letter stating you could get the new one in Feb if they need it.

Hi everyone

This is my experience. I will be working at the EC this March and I only applied once (I am not going to say where I'll be working, as this is irrelevant). I hope this helps you guys.

Filled in the application slowly, completing sections bit by bit, but overall it did not take me more than 5/6 hours in total. Think carefully about the DGs you want to work in. What is your passion? Do you have some relevant work experience (even if it is volunteering)? My choices were not the most popular, but quite popular. So be strategic. I was lucky that I am more interested in moderately popular DGs.
Please check you application many times as there will be mistakes- and looks unprofessional. Make sure you have all the documents they need, add references, past employment contracts, up-to-date CV (not necessarily using the template suggested, it didn't matter in my experience) if you have them, as they look good and boost your application. So my advice is to be meticulous as this is a major reason why apps are rejected.
I sent all my documents about a week before the deadline by post. You should leave at least one week to do this.

I was told I passed the first stage on 30 November, and I got a phonecall about 9 days later. No warning or anything beforehand. It was lucky that I was home, as my interviewer didn't call my mobile. It was not an interview at all, so don't worry about difficult questions. I think it is very harsh for them to expect us to act as if in a real interview, as we are not warned beforehand. I was told about the position, what project I would be working on if selected etc. The man was very friendly and positive about my experiences, and even though it wasn't binding, I was 90% certain that I got the position - even though I had not applied to this DG.

The next day, I received an email from my first choice. We set a time for interview after 2 days.
I did some research into the DG, but this was not really needed. Again it was not really an interview, but more formal than the first one. I was told I was on a shortlist and would be contacted after a few days. Unfortunately, my first choice also wanted to select me, but I had already been reserved by the person who contacted me first.
I had no choice but to go with the first DG who contacted me -but I am still very grateful!

Basically, I found out I would be working at the EC in late December by the DGs themselves. I waited about a month to get the official offer email, which was frustrating!

I agree with everyone that this method of selection is not transparent at all. Waiting around, worrying, when we should be doing something more useful. I am going to try to raise this issue when I am in Brussels next month, but I am sure past trainees have tried to make the procedure less opaque.

Also to those who have tried but failed, don't be disheartened. There is a large international community in Brussels, try different institutions. Get someone to read your motivation in your application - because it should be clear, concise, a bit like a short essay, but totally focusing on why you are interested.

I was worried that I couldn't demonstrate enough EU knowledge. I only studied 2 EU modules at university, but obviously the motivation is more important.

Finally, my philosophy is don't try to focus on one particular way of doing something. If you want to work in the public sector, it is important to have experience in the private sector and you can bring a different experience when you finally become a civil servant or whatever - which is really important in the EU economies, and elsewhere . It is really important to be flexible, take opportunities as they come and don't think too hard about what it means to your future.

It is really difficult for young people to find work today. But never, ever give up. Life is too important.

I wish you all every success!

Thanks bobblehat for your tips (although it is already after deadline Wink.

I didn't add my CV, since there was not much too much add apart from what it was written in mu application form. I also heard from other people that they were asked by certain DG to send upadated CV after preselection, so for that reason I didn't include my CV. I thought it has to be in Europass format which for me is irritaiting.

Besides if you have around 6000 apps, you dont read everything so carefully.

I think application form is the most important document- you get a points for studies, motivation and languages. But it is true that it is better to add documents to prove your previous work experience (especially if you have a letter of reference).

Hi

I have a BA in Economics
MSc in Politics
I studied abroad for one year

I have some work experience. A few months in a consultancy, teaching experience, a few months in a government department. Volunteering as well.

So pretty average I think. I know a lot of people have so much specialist expertise and working backgrounds and I was worried that would be a factor against me - Politics/econ graduate is very common

hi all Smile

I sent my application almost on the last possible day, but i hope i did the best i could Smile

There's only one thing that bothers me... I forgot (well... omitted) to put numbers on the accompanyng documents. Hope it won't be a reason to reject my application...
But, I have ordered it according to the numbers in the checklist Smile

Now we just have to wait, at first till mid/end of April for eligibility check and then hopefully preselection and selection Smile)

I sent it yesterday too, even if I don't feel so hopeful (just today I wasn't selected for another traineeship, bad day)... I'll just sit and wait!

Hello, I don't think you have a problem, actually I don't regard it as an omission. On the instructions there is no reference indicating either to check the checklist or to put numbers on the documents. I didn't do any of them. I think it is something you choose to make, optional.

Maybe other users can say their opinion..

I think that as long as all documents needed are there, nothing bad can happen - there are more important things than this to assess your application Smile

hey, again Smile
Hope you are right!
Cause I can clearly remember that after sending my application i decided to download it for the last time on my Desktop. And then... i noticed there were several bullets, highlighted in red, stating the things we already know: not to send any originals etc + that we have to sign the number of pages according to the numbers in the checklist... duuuuuh
I guess it will not be lethal, but at least it will be viewed as kind of "abstraction" and not paying attention to details (details marked in red! Sad...)
Anyway, may the power be with us and be successful in the competition Smile Razz

It was on the last page where we had to submit the application form, we could download a draft version or the submitted one there. It is not accessible any more :S
